New Music Spotlight: Covers

After a small hiatus, I'm back, and bringing a new feature on the blog!

So much new music comes out every week that it's hard to keep track. I try to keep my Hot Tracks playlist updated as much as possible but I feel like highlighting some of my current favourite songs, albums, and music videos is a great way to expose you to more music!

June is almost at an end, and there has been so much to share! With many artists being in quarantine, there has been lots of music coming out, including many cool covers. So without further delay, heres what I've been listening to lately - which as you'll see, happen to be a lot of covers.

Murderer - City and Colour

I can't say I have always been a City and Colour fanatic. I wouldn't even characterize myself as one now. But last year, their album A Pill For Loneliness was my favourite album of the year. I never expected what they would follow it up with would blow me away like "Murderer" did. It's beautiful, and haunting, and Dallas Greens voice is perfect for it. Dare I say he is getting better with age? It's almost like it was written for him. Much to my surprise, "Murderer" is actually a cover of a song by Low. This song also seems really profound, but I don't have any clue as to what it means. And that's ok. I'm just glad that it happened, because there's probably no way I would have stumbled upon the original by Low.

An Honest Mistake - Mating Ritual

During our recent stint of quarantine, I obviously crushed a lot of televisions shows. Because, what else was I supposed to do? Anyway, Looking for Alaska came across my radar and was a pretty good watch. What really drew me in however, was the soundtrack. The show was set in 2005 and featured songs directly from the era, which, not to age me, was the year I graduated high school, and I definitely knew many of them by heart. But it wasn't just the nostalgia factor of hearing top 40 bangers from The Killers, 50 Cent, and the Gorillaz that made the soundtrack great. It was the covers that made the moments for me. My favourite one by far was "An Honest Mistake" by Mating Ritual, originally by The Bravery. Don't get me wrong, the original song had its merits. But the cover is miles and miles ahead of it. It's a perfect reimagining, and totally different than the original.

Young and Beautiful - Glass Animals

I debated including this one right now because I am definitely going to feature this band on a blog very soon. During quarantine, Glass Animals lead singer Dave Bayley has done a couple of cool projects. One of them is releasing a series of covers from his home studio. In this series he happened to cover one of my favourite songs "Young and Beautiful" originally by Lana del Rey. It's not just the feel of the cover that is really well done, but the home-style recording and looping he used to make it. I always find it cool when artists use loops to make songs all on their own. The video on how he crafts it is definitely worth the watch!

There so much more music out there and I look forward to continuing to share it with you all! For all 9 of you still around reading this thing, thanks! You know I am always looking for new music, so be sure to keep me posted as to what you have been listening to! And as always, If there's any artist or topic you would like hear about, feel free slide into my DM's and let me know!
