I hope you enjoyed my last artist spotlight. I'm aiming for this to be a semi-regular feature on the blog. I'm always looking for new music and ways to discover it. So if I can somehow do the same for my readers, then why not?!
Silicone Boone is a relatively new artist who was unknown to me until a few months ago. When I first heard of Silicone, he had one song on Apple Music. This was disappointing to me, because it was really good; I fell in love with it right away. "Found You" has that soulful indie vibe that kind of sounds like church music, which makes a lot of sense after learning that he is from Kentucky. But unlike a lot of indie music, its filled with hope and a positive message, which is part of why I really like it. As an artist Silicone has a unique sounding voice. You may think I say a lot, but to be fair, I believe that you need to stand out in order to make it these days.
The second single of the debut album is "Mars." I think I was shocked when I first listened to it. These were the first two songs from an artist who not only have I never heard of, and to my knowledge are the first songs released by this artist, and they were incredible. The production is very well done, but what stands out in both songs is the passion and talent in Silicone's voice. He utilizes his unique sound and plays to that strength with simple, driving, hope-filled tracks.
Silicone's first full album The Reaches dropped in December. My first impression was a large Killers influence, guitar driven, great vocals, electronic sampling. Songs like "Diamond" and "We'll Fly Away" are well done, upbeat, and filled with positivity, but I think found a yearning for more of the vibes of the first two singles. It sounds like Silicone is trying to find his identity musically, and I'm more than willing to go along with that ride. For a first album it's really well done, and experiments with sounds in a way that you only really find in seasoned artists who have been around a while.
So far, I am a big fan, and look forward to hearing more. Silicone is an artist I would be first in line for tickets if he comes around our neck of the woods. [Silicone if you're reading this: you have a fan base in Edmonton so please, please come.]
Take a listen, let me know what you think, and comment if you have a favourite track from Reaches!
