Sometimes, fame hits all at once. In the age of talent shows and YouTube, artists can step into the spotlight and begin a career in music faster than the time it takes a boomer to download a new app onto their iPad. This was not the case for Labrinth, who over the last decade has gone from unknown hip-hop artist to a grammy winning producer who seems to be coming into his own.
The funny thing is, some of you still might be saying 'who'? I don't blame you, per say. Aside from his R&B single "Jealous", most of the music Labrinth put out pre-2018 was forgettable. He shined when he was working with other artists. Early in his career, Labrinth's best songs were with "Tiny Tempah", and then eventually being featured with The Weekend and Kygo. He also did some writing for artists such as Ed Sheeran and Mike Posner. While it was clear that he was a talented individual, it seems like Labrinth hadn't yet burst through the bubble. But it was coming.
In 2018 Labrinth formed a super group called LSD with Sia and Diplo where he took on a lot of the writing duties and features on every track. The group released their album in April of 2019 and went on to win a Grammy. And still, most people have probably never heard of Labrinth, or at the very least wouldn't be familiar with any of his music. Why You Shouldn't Be Sleeping On Labrinth Anymore.
One word: Euphoria.
A critically acclaimed new HBO drama that aired this past year. Make no mistake, it was well done, moving, well acted and hit hard on some truths of addiction and high school bullying culture. But the real star of this show for me was the score, woven together through each episode, emphasizing key emotional moments, and culminating with the song "All for Us" in the final episode of the season. Labrinth flexed his his muscle as the lead composer for Euphoria and delivered a truly memorable score.
His latest single Oblivion, off of Labrinth's newest album Imagination & The Misfit Kid shows off his vocal talents and his seemingly newfound talent for making songs that you just can't stop listening to.
